Help to prevent avian pox in wild bird populations

This year there have been reports of avian pox which particularly affects great tits. The avian pox virus is thought to be spread between birds in three main ways: by biting insects (e.g. mosquitoes, mites, flies), by direct bird-to-bird contact and by indirect contact via contaminated surfaces such as perches or bird tables. Since the virus is relatively resistant and can persist on contaminated surfaces for long periods of time, it is essential that feeders are cleaned regularly.

Gardman has developed products to help the keen birder to more easily clean feeders.  For example, the premium bird feeders are easier to take apart for cleaning, particularly the new Heavy Duty Flip Top Seed Feeder with magnetic detachable ports and easy release spring loaded base.

In addition, new products in the Gardman range and all new feeder products in the British Trust for Ornithology range are coated with Feedsafe, the stay-clean biocidal coating that prevents the build up of harmful microbes, which helps stop the transmission of all bird diseases, including avian pox.
